Surgery: Early stage tumors are often possible to remove surgically. Depending on the location and size of the tumor, the surgeon may remove a portion of the lung, or even an entire lung (a procedure called a pneumonectomy).

Five-year lung cancer survival rates only average thirteen percent overall. If the disease is detected at an early stage, and the patient is young and healthy, however, five-year survival increases to 85 percent.

High-risk groups, such as smokers, could be routinely screened for signs of the disease. Screening methods for breast, colon, and cervical tumors have all been proven to improve prognosis and survival rates.

The difficulty lies in developing a screening technique that can be proven to extend life and improve treatment options. To date, no one diagnostic technique has been proven to effectively detect lung tumors in their early stages. An Alternative Treatment for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the single most common form of solid tumor in humans. It is newly diagnosed every 2.6 minutes. It is present in more than 9 million men and kills 1 man every 13 minutes.
Prostate cancer will afflict 1 in 6 men in their lifetimes and is only 2nd to Lung Cancer in the United States. Black males have incidence and mortality rates as much as 50% higher than other racial or ethnic groups. Prostate Cancer is nearly 100% survivable if detected early.
Annual testing is recommended for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal examinations for all men 45+years old (and men at greater risk beginning at 40).
Cancer is rarely detected early because we simply do not have the technology to do so and is generally asymptomatic. Hormone refractory prostate cancer is more difficult to treat and has a poorer prognosis.
Conventional treatments include radical prostatectomy, cryotherapy, hormonal therapy including surgical castration, lutenizing hormone-releasing hormone therapy, and combined androgen blockage. These types of therapy can cause the following side-effects; impotence; loss of sexual desire; hot flashes; weight gain; fatigue; reduced brain function; and loss of muscle mass. External bean radiation therapy (ENRT) and brachytherapy (small implants of radioactive pellets are still other methods of conventional treatments. There does not appear to be any conventional therapy for prostate cancer that does not carry an increased risk of impotence.
However, because of the overwhelming side-effect of impotence, some men refuse conventional treatment and seek safer, nontoxic alternative treatments instead such as garlic, soy, lycopene, or Poly-MVA.
Poly-MVA contains a lipoic acid/palladium complex (LAPd). The initials “MVA” stand for “minerals, vitamins and amino acids.” The product is a proprietary formula that contains palladium, alpha-lipoic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, and cyanocobalamin, formyl-methionine, and acetylcysteine. LAPd is the main active ingredient.
Toxicology studies for the LAPd formulation have demonstrated that it is extremely safe. Case studies indicate that the product may stabilize prostate cancer and mitigate the very side effects that may be caused by conventional treatments or that may present at the time of diagnosis.
Case studies provide complelling evidence that this formulation may be a worthwhile alternative treatment for men who refuse any conventional treatment.

Colon Cancer

Colon cancer symptoms can appear in a number of different ways, depending on where in the intestine the tumor is and how advanced it is. Some people will have no colon cancer symptoms until the cancer is in its late stages. Common colon cancer symptoms include:

- Passing blood in the stool 
- Large amounts of mucous with the stool 
- A change from the normal bowel habit, such as loose stool or 
- Constipation 
- Abdominal pain 
- Weight loss 
- Feeling tired 

These colon cancer symptoms can also occur in other conditions. For example, hemorrhoids can cause blood in the stool and infections in the colon can cause diarrhea.

If there is bleeding from a tumor, it often occurs slowly over a period of many months. In this case, the person may be unaware of the loss of blood but may become anemic, possibly leading to shortness of breath, a feeling of tiredness and dizziness.

If a tumour becomes large enough, it may block the colon completely. When this occurs, the blockage prevents the passage of stool and gas, leading to swelling of the abdomen. As food is not able to pass the blockage, affected people often feel sick and may vomit. If this happens, the person needs to be admitted to hospital urgently. Pressure building up in the colon may cause it to rupture, leading to a serious infection of the abdomen called peritonitis.

As with other cancers, colon cancer symptoms may spread to other parts of the body. Almost half of all people with colon cancer will have some spread to glands within the abdomen. Some will also have spread to other parts of the body such as the liver, lungs and bones.
When colon cancer symptoms appear, it is important to contact a doctor as soon as possible.

BABY CANCER

Everyone knows of cancers which strike adults. There are hundreds of groups working to raise money to further the fight against Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer and Lung Cancer. Many people believe that cancer only strikes in our later years, yet cancer is the leading cause of disease-related deaths among children in the United States. And despite the efforts of researchers to find a cure, childhood cancer rates are increasing at a rate of approximately 1% each year .

More and more cases of babies being born with cancer are being reported, including primary tumors of the brain, kidney, neck, and other areas of the body. Why? We don't know. How do we treat them? We don't always know. However, we do know that because of significant advances in therapy, 79% of these children will survive 5 years or more, an increase of almost 46% since the early 1960s, when childhood cancers were nearly always fatal. Consider the fact that every child saved has an entire lifetime to look forward to as opposed to the older adults we typically think of as having cancer, and it makes it even more surprising that the National Cancer Institute is only earmarking a startling 3% of its funds towards research into childhood cancers.
 

What can we do to prevent baby cancers? We don't know. We need more research, better treatment options and better hope for the families. Families sometimes also need a break from the tough times associated with caring for a child with cancer.
